Sayuk

Sayuk is an annual publication that returns each year just as the salmon return to spawn. Each issue is a collection of educational, impactful, and untold stories relevant to the people living and working in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The magazine's focus is Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon and the people who use this natural resource to survive.

Challenge

I wanted to create a magazine written for the people in my community— the year-round locals, fishermen, and seasonal cannery workers who love spending their summers in Bristol Bay and want to learn more about the history and news going on in this unique, rural part of the world. The biggest challenge with this project was curating very personal content and making it interesting and digestible for the public. I wanted to pay homage to my native roots without looking too much like a history lesson.

Solution

Creating a magazine that will bring together the community and educate those who are guests in our rural community. I want to teach and remind these people about whose land they are treading on. I want to give them insight into different perspectives of the salmon run that they might otherwise be oblivious to.

Research

This project began over the summer when I began collecting content from friends and family.  I approached the tone of this magazine strategically, with specific photographer friends and out of print resources in mind. I began focusing on an overarching genre and tone based on source material available to me, and approached writing the remaining content in a way that would complement the content I'd gathered.

Overall, my visual design solutions centered around distilling a cohesive narrative that served as a guiding force for visual choices. It was important to me to create a magazine that read educational but not stuffy.
